  • Tales of Blood Pipes, Red Beets and More

    I have determined that my life really doesn't lend itself to dull moments.  Things are busy.  I'm down to my last 7 weeks of pregnancy and I have about 15 weeks worth of things on my 'Do-Before-the-Baby-is-Born' list.  Looks like I will need to start picking and choosing which of those things HAVE to be done and which ones are optional.

    Things like retrieve baby clothes and car seat from the basement HAVE to be done.  Things like paint my bedroom before the baby is born seems optional.  I just don't know how long I can deal with the mustard yellow walls with many streaks and stains on them???

    Last weekend Joe and I went on a little pre-baby getaway.  I can't remember the last time we had a weekend that was as fun and relaxing.  Utterly pampered is what I was.  Lots of great food.  Shopping.  Reading.  Relaxing.  Ahhhh.....

    We stopped at Guitar Center.  Hundreds and hundreds of guitars worth lots and lots of money!!!

    On Friday evening we went to an Ichiban Steakhouse.  Wonderful.  Steak, Shrimp, Noodles, Rice (with yum-yum sauce) and Vegetables.  Quite tasty.

    KK.  Hard at work.

    The rest of the weekend we were able to eat well while using gift cards.  Yeah!  Red Lobster.  Olive Garden.  Cracker Barrel.  Etc.

    I must say I always feel so inspired to cook after a day or two out of the kitchen.  Now if I had more time to go with the inspiration I'd be all set.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    While we were gone the kids stayed at my parents.  The kids were given specific instructions to eat whatever grandma makes.  On Saturday, grandma made red beets.  Matthew didn't think he should have to eat them.  Grandma explained that he needs to eat them because it helps purify his blood.  He said he doesn't have any blood and therefore he doesn't have to eat the red beets.
    Grandma shifted into science teacher mode and taught him that yes, he really does have blood.  Now he calls his veins his blood pipes.  And he's really worried if he can see his veins well.  In an alarmed voice he will tell me that his blood is almost getting out.
    I could write an entire book on the funny things this little guy says and does.
    Last week one day after going potty he washed his hands and ran out of the bathroom.  All of a sudden he goes streaking back into the bathroom, spit in the toilet and went running back out.  I asked him about it and he said he ALWAYS spits when he goes potty and he forgot that time.
    Talk about taking care of the important things of life.......
    His ferocious expression is how he lives his life.  Such passion, vigor and zeal!!!!
    Can it be that Hannah will be 5 this month???  Wow!  I love spending time with Hannah.  She soaks things up like a little sponge.  She is a great little shopping buddy.  She enjoys helping in the garden.  She is a willing helper in the kitchen.  And I realize this may not last and those things may not be cool as she gets older so I'm going to enjoy every minute while I can.
    Summertime means lots of fun outside and lots of fun with neighbor kids.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Joe was kind enough to build two cold frames for me.  From the picture you would think that the kids built it but they were only 'helping'.  You know how that kind of help goes.......

    I'm in the learning stages with this cold frame thing.  Right now we have a couple kinds of lettuce, spinach and onions in our cold frame.  Can't wait till we start reaping the benefits of our labor.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Chuck E Cheese
    Family Fun night at Chuck E Cheese.  The kids loved it!!!  We thought we could have more bang for our buck going elsewhere but I don't think the kids felt the same way.  They ran from one thing to the next as fast as possible.  Driving race cars, shooting animals, riding horses, shooting hoops, etc.
    I was picturing the amount of germs floating about that place..........  EW!
    Lifting off in the helicopter....
    The helicopter lifts off when you pedal.  Matthew couldn't reach the pedal so Joe provided the man power to get Matthews helicopter into the air.
    Riding horse.  (Side note: The kids informed me yesterday that they want real animals.  The top three on the list are a pony, a cow and a bear.  Matthew is the one that ordered the bear.  He said if he had a bear he could hunt it and eat it.  So much for sticking to animals that we can afford and maintain.  I was thinking along the lines of a cat, dog or bunny would be more our style.....)
    Well, all those Monday morning chores are calling for me.  Somehow the place seems to get trashed over the weekend.  The laundry seems to pile up and the refrigerator seems to be empty.  Maybe these things only happen at my house???
    Have a wonderful week!
  • The Winter that Keeps on Giving
    It seems we've been very blessed this year - with LOTS of snow (as well as many other things!)  Do you consider snow to be a blessing??  I do.  I have enjoyed almost every minute of it.
    But, I'm also itching to get out in the garden again as well as throwing open the windows and listening to the birds sing.  It will be such a timesaver to not have to get the kids in all their winter garb when heading out the door.  Flip-flops on the feet and out the door we go.
    I'm still enjoying winter but I will welcome spring with a warm embrace once it decided to show up.
    What have we been doing?
    IMG_5937
    Eating homemade ice cream!!!  For Christmas, Joe got me a sweet little ice cream machine.  I was thrilled! (I kind of told him what I wanted... )  Chocolate ice cream was first on the list but we have lots more to come.  Can't wait to try smoothies, frozen yogurt, gelato and much more.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    IMG_5952

    Such beautiful blue eyes, rosy little cheeks and full of such life and energy.  I need to start praying for the woman that he may marry someday.  She will need a double portion of energy to keep up with him!

    IMG_5957

    Such sweetness, such maturity and such a little girl all wrapped up in one package.  She helps me SO much and will be such a little mom when the baby is born.  She just can't wait.

    Notice the scab above her nose/between her eyes.  How does a person get a carpet burn there???  I would have thought she would have gotten it on the tip of her nose or her forehead but she managed to hit dead center.  We even saw it happen.....

    IMG_5946

    Lots of snow!

    IMG_5943

    More snow beauty (My view from our living room window)

    IMG_5900

    Still more snow beauty!  (The bushes looking out the back door)

    I think my azaleas are ruined.   They had so much wet, heavy snow on them that I think a lot of the branches broke off.  Maybe if I trim them back really hard this year they'll grow out for next year???

    IMG_5893

    Joe has burned many calories and fat grams this winter by shoveling LOTS of snow.  We don't have a plow of any kind and we weren't willing to pay anyone to clear it so he supplied the manpower.  We did have a kind neighbor who opened our lane twice.  He must have felt bad for Joe.

    Notice Hannah.  This particular snow was so deep the kids found it easier to crawl then walk.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And I'll leave you with something seriously exciting.
    IMG_5969
    Yes, it's part of the my mend, alter and fix pile that is now NO MORE!!!  That is right.  Every button has been sewed on, every hole has been patched and every needed tuck has been sewn in.  WOO-HOO.  On the same day, I got caught up on my ironing too.  I was really on a roll that day.  Can you tell I seem to procrastinate when it comes to a few of these projects????
    Next project:  Making a cover for a down comforter for Matthews bed.
    Next, next project: Making a dress for Hannahs birthday and a matching one for her doll.  She found one in her new American Doll catalogue that she LOVES but I don't like the price so........
  • Check it out
    I have started a blog strictly for my journey towards frugal living.  I want to keep this as a personal blog about kids, marriage, our life, the crazy things we do and the fun we have.
    So if you have interest in following my frugal ventures which include shopping, gardening, couponing etc. you can find me over here.
    My first post is about my biggest couponing challenge yet.  Spending over $100.00 and in the end only having paid out a little over a dollar.
    In other news:
    This weekend has felt so Alberta-like.    Lots of snow and some wind to go with it.
    IMG_5696
    IMG_5789
    A couple of pictures taken in Alberta.  What a great trip.  Notice the snow behind us.  It was almost as deep as Joe and I are tall.  Crazy stuff!
    We didn't quite reach that level in Ohio this weekend but it's more snow then we've seen in a long time.  Spent a lot of time at home.  We did manage a birthday party on Friday night, a hockey game on Saturday night and a Super Bowl Party Sunday night.  Otherwise we slept in, played games and ate.  Tomorrow is back to reality!
    Have a great week!
  • Firsts (-including "My Man in the Kitchen?")
    You would think that by the age of 29 my season of experiencing firsts would be about over.  Right??  I have determined "firsts" can be a lifelong experience if I want them to be.........
    So here's a few of our "firsts"......
    1.  After listening to 'Do Hard Things' (more on that another time) I realized my fear of failure sometimes keeps me from attempting something new.  I would rather stick with what I already know.  I'm convinced that is why I don't swim.  It's my fear of failure.  At any rate, here's my January attempt at something new.
    Whole Wheat Tortillas  (you can check out the recipe for yourself)
    IMG_5834
    They were pretty good-as in, they were edible.  The kids enjoyed eating them plain.  Straight out of the pan and into their little mouths'.
    IMG_5837
    They were put in balls and allowed to rest for a few hours.  In that time the outside dried out a bit and when I went to make nice circles....... let's just say they were kind of "guess your own shape" tortillas instead of round ones.
    IMG_5838
    IMG_5839
    Here's the final product.  All in all, I'd say it's a project I would try again and would like to get better at.  Maybe you've made some before???  What tips do you have for me?
    I used 1/2 of them and made Spanish Rice Burritos.  I stuffed my family with whole grains- whole wheat tortillas and the burritos had brown rice.
    After they came out of the oven we put lettuce and sour cream on top.  It was quite delicious although Joe prefers white rice.  Just haven't gotten him converted into the whole grain family.
    2. My Man in the Kitchen??
    This hits the category of firsts because it was a solo project.  Joe does a lot of grilling over the summer but it's always stuff that I've prepped for him.
    This was his baby-from start to finish!
    IMG_5846
    He got all the ingredients out which included 2 lbs of bacon and 1lb of sausage.  I think he forget that he has high cholesterol.
    IMG_5853
    He took pictures of every step and was quite meticulous in preparation.
    IMG_5861
    Can we just say this day we're NOT counting calories or fat grams????
    IMG_5864
    Rolling it up.
    IMG_5869
    And the "Bacon Explosion" is headed for the grill.
    IMG_5878
    Enjoying the final results of his project.    I must say it was quite tasty.
    Side note: I do remember one other project he attempted many years ago.  DEEP FRIED PICKLES.  How gross is that?  Please remember that I HATE pickles and coming home from work and having your house smelling like greasy pickles is really nasty.    I think he fried almost an entire jar of fried pickles.  Ewwwwwww!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3.  While we're on the subject of food.  This is the first time that my turn for hot food at church, our turn for host and hostess and our turn to host small group has all fallen in a time frame of a week and a half.  I have been piled under a load of food prep.  I love working in the kitchen.  It's my favorite room of the house but I am finding other areas getting WAY behind.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    4.  We had another first.  Joe was having devotions at church on Sunday and the audience is laughing at him.  He soon realized they weren't laughing at him;  they were laughing at the MOUSE that was running around on the stage while he was attempting to have devotions.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    5. We got to see our baby for the first time.  An ultrasound is considered "seeing" your baby, right?   It just makes it so real when you see the little hands and feet.  The shape of the nose.  The hand moving into the mouth. etc. Can't wait to see this baby for real!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    6. Hannah and Matthew also had a first while I was at the doctors.  They stayed at Aunt Wilmas house and got to gather eggs.  They were thrilled and are still talking about how they "picked" eggs.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    While there are more firsts I could share, this isn't getting the laundry done, the house cleaned, or the errands taken care of.

    Have a most blessed week!

At this moment
